Blog 3!!
The cultural artifact that i'm choosing to write about is the character Rachel from the TV series F.R.I.E.N.D.S. This tv show is about a group of friends (3 women and 3 male) who live across from each other and start to become best friends. Throughout the tv series you see each and everyone of them grow since the tv series aired on NBC from September 22, 1994, to May 6, 2004, lasting ten seasons. Obviously i wasn't alive when they first aired the show but i did catch up with the tv serious when i was about 16. My mother would rewatch and binge watch all the time. I started watching the tv show because I started to look up to the character Rachel. Rachel Green who is played by Jennifer Aniston, was this young girl who started to live on her own and tried to make a life for herself. Ever since I was young, I tried to be more mature for my age. It was probably based off the fact that all my cousins were way older than me so I wanted to fit in. Seeing Rachel's transition within the tv series, I found myself relating to it alot. She started off with nothing. She had to work and had to grow up and start to become an adult. She stopped relying on her parents and started doing things on her on. With that said, i hated asking my mom for money. I usually saved up from working so i can pay for things that i wanted. She started to become more independent and started relying on herself for her happiness and stopped looking for it within other people. This was probably something that made me love her even more. With that it really inspired me to become independent and not rely on anyone for anything. That has been something that has stuck with my whole life. I believe that's why i've done so good by myself out here in San Marcos and being by myself out here while my family is more up North. Lastly growing up, i started to realize i would start to dress the way she dresses. Something about that times style intrigues me so much. You will see me wearing high waisted pants with cute flowy shirts like hers. Overall, this cultural artifact has impacted me in such a huge way by the little things that happened in this tv show. Looking through my “critically vigilant" lense, I do see how the setcom portrayed Rachel's Character as a typical pretty white rich girl that got everything she wanted becuase she was daddys girl, but it still doesn't make me see everything differently because at the end, she turns out top grow into this whole different person that she was truly meant to be.

Prompt One
The cultural artifact that I chose to do my blog on is The Devil Wears Prada movie. This movie is a perfect movie that shows gender representation. I use to love this movie because it reminds me of my grandma. We would always sit down and watch it whenever we were together. The movie is about a young girl (Anne Hathaway) getting a job at this big fashion magazine place. She was an assistant to the meanest boss you can ever think of. Her boss would criticize women all the time if they didn't fit the right criteria of a woman's body. Throughout the movie gender representation is shown drastically for women. It would constantly talk about the perfect size for a women, the right clothing for women, the right hairstyle for women, and the right makeup for women.
Prompt two
Lauren weisberger created the story and David Frankel directed it. This movie was released in 2006. During that time, a womens and male representation and male representation was pretty clear and well known. In many other movies that are released, you see similar types of characteristics involving male and female representation with clothing, style and looks. Im confident that with a male director, there was obviously some gazing being contributed to the movie. Some creative techniques that were use to attract my attention, was Anne hathaway's getting the dream job she wanted and working under someone she inspired. Also, all the clothing and models in the movie. The director made it clear on what perception he wanted the “right” type of women to look like. Another creative technique was her falling in love and realizing she didn't like the perception she had to have in order to have the job. That really was a creative technique in the movie because it also had her realize she didn't have to do all the things she was doing to be qualified to be the proper women for her job. Other people might understand the message different than me, because others might think it was dumb of her to let go of such an amazing opportunity for her career. It can also be misunderstood by Anne Hathaway's character going against society and downgrading herself into a more “comfortable” lifestyle and look. They could probably think (again) that it was a dumb decision of hers. I think the most important value anyone should take from this movie, is to be comfortable and happy with yourself, and not to change for anyone. Many people think it's important to “follow the crowd” or follow what society does and thinks, when you should do, wear and say whatever you want. I believe this message is being sent because at the time, society wants all women to look like that, and also act like that. They want women to wear high brands and be super skinny, and never eat anything above 100 calories, so the fact that the protagonist in the movie walked away from all that was eye opening.

Prompt 1
For this cultural artifact, it is a women cleaning and the caption expressing on how that's her real job. it expresses the “true” role of a women. In their eyes, it is seen that a womens role should be cleaning the house and doing the real job of a women which is cleaning and maintaining the house. This can be taken offence to women because of how this ad is stereotyping women back in the days, where a womens job was to only cleans and to do house work, instead of going out and getting an actual job.
Prompt 2
What it shows is that women are looked out so little and that men only have one perspective of women, which is them basically being a maid and just cleaning and doing “women stuff” while men are out there doing “men stuff”. As you can see clearly, it shows femininity by having that specific outlook on women and how they should just stuck to house work. And it shows masculinity by showing how men see women, which as discussed earlier, on them just seeing them as a maid. It doesn't at all attempts to push forward the traditional ideas. I think it actually pushes them more back on the ideals of having women be maid and not to get jobs.
Prompt 3
I think this has showed me not to agree on what pop culture thinks women's roles are, because I for sure know that women are more capable of doing more than just house work, and i know that some women are even capable on doing a way better job then some men. This kind of reminds me of how my culture (mexicans) do things. Men are expected to be the stronger ones and have more responsibilities than the females. On the other hand, women are suppose to take care of the children at home, clean the house 24/7, do the laundry, make sure there's breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the table, and cater to the man. I for one have never agreed on this, so this ad just reminds me of how significant it is to things that are done in Mexico.
Prompt 4
What it shows is a women cleaning and the caption saying that that is a womens real job. The social world is men and women having these specific roles that have been getting stereotyped for so long, an it is acted upon by still continuing to encourage these roles. The creators are Mr Cleans company trying to advertise their cleaning projects. The audience they are trying to get are men and women. Women, because they are the only ones that clean, and Men, because the message is addressed more to them.
